Bowen Technique Therapy

Bowen Technique was pioneered by Thomas Ambrose Bowen, born in 1916 in Geelong, Australia.

As a young man he worked as a labourer. After working on numerous jobs and observing football trainers and other sports professionals, he developed an interest in massage and body work.  By the time he was 40 he had established a full-time practice in remedial therapy using his self developed technique.

By 1978, when he was interviewed by a parliamentary committee looking into complementary medicine, he was treating 280 clients per week and an impressive 13,000 clients annually, of which 88% needed only 2-3 treatments.

What to expect from a treatment.

A treatment is given through light clothing.  This allows the therapist to move the skin sufficiently to create a Bowen move.  A detailed history is taken so that comparisons can be made in the following sessions to assess any changes that have occurred.  The first session will take longer as this detailed history is taken.  Allow up to an hour.

Every treatment is carried out in privacy starting with the client face down on a couch and may have a light towel covering the body to ensure comfort and warmth.

The therapist will make some small moves and will then leave the room to allow the energy to circulate.  After about 2 minutes the therapist will return and carry out other moves in the treatment plan.  At some point during the treatment the therapist will ask you to turn over and lie on your back. Further moves will be made with the therapist leaving the room for at least 2 minutes after each series of moves. This treatment is so relaxing clients have been known to fall asleep!

The first treatment is a set-up treatment, getting the body used to Bowen technique, and usually takes 20 minutes.  Subsequent treatments can take up to 45 minutes.

If any discomfort is felt please inform the therapist as the treatment can be changed to accommodate this.

It is recommended that 2- 3 treatments are carried out to ensure the body has a chance to respond to treatments. The appointments, preferably, should be carried out within 5-10 days apart. It is recommended that no other therapies, i.e. massage, acupuncture etc, are received during the treatments so as to gauge the changes from Bowen treatments.

"Bowen works by sending a message to the body for the body to re-balance itself."
